Riding Trains

“Time for a train ride”, I thought.

I used to do this more often (along with sitting alongside some rail line north of the city waiting for trains to pass by) but it’s been awhile since I just rode a GO or VIA Rail train for no good reason.

Today’s ride is Danforth to Union on the Lakeshore East line and then a switch to the Stouffville line to head north up to Mount Joy. There’s honestly nothing at the station in Mount Joy, but it’s a destination along a longer journey. I could have just hopped the Lakeshore East out to Oshawa, or the Lakeshore West to Port Credit or something, but I’ve done all those many times.

From Mount Joy, I’ll just ride back to the city the same way I went up there. Maybe I’ll get off at Kennedy and either hop the Crosstown for a bit, or the subway over to Victoria Park and back home.

Sometimes going nowhere for no reason is a good thing to do. It’s an escape from the house or from everything going on in my life. I hop on the train and just enjoy the smooth ride on steel rails to wherever the train can take me. It’s time to think, or time to not think. I can put Olivia Dean on my AirPods and pick up my Kindle to read a few chapters of a book. Or I can just sit there and look out the window for things I’ve never seen or things that have changed.

Some day I’ll have to get back on the ultimate getaway train trip and head back out west on the Canadian. Five days and four nights of total disconnection sounds pretty good to me.
